Julie Guerin, ELSE Canada, National Co-Chair

Operations Manager, M Power Energy Solutions

Julie runs the Operations at M Power Energy Solutions, a Tesla Energy Authorized Reseller and Installer in Canada. As a founding employee, Julie plays a significant role in commercializing the Tesla Powerwall in Canada, expanding the business and developing the customer experience process. Julie also leads M Power’s relationships with service providers in Canada and is also responsible evaluating project developments and installations. Previously, Julie worked with NRG Home Solar, a Fortune 250 company and largest solar power developer in the U.S., where she has helped bring to life some of America’s largest and most innovative rooftop solar projects. Julie has her diploma from York University in Toronto and currently serves as Co-Chair of the National Board of Directors for Emerging Leaders of Solar Energy (ELSE).

Mike Skirzynski, ELSE Canada, National Co-Chair

Engineering Coordinator at Potentia Solar Inc.

Potentia Solar is an independent power producer focused on developing, owning and operating solar photovoltaic energy systems for rooftop and ground installations. To date, Potentia owns over 280 commissioned sites totalling over 55MW of capacity. As engineering coordinator, Mike oversees the efficient flow of all technical information relating to solar energy projects in development. Mike also reviews drawings prior to detailed analysis to ensure standards compliance, both technical and system-owner/landlord mandated.

Alex Topper, ELSE Canada, Speaker of the House

Channel Marketing Manager, NRG Home Solar

Alex is a proud University of Toronto graduate with a Major in Urban Studies and Minors in Environmental Studies and Human Geography. He began working in the solar industry with KB Racking as a Technical Account Manager. Alex spearheaded sales along the US east coast, exceeding sales targets and more than doubling total US sales in his 18 months. His greatest accomplishments were the sales of several +1MW projects and acquisition of several key US clients for KB Racking. Solar racking was the perfect entry point to the industry that allowed him develop valuable skills and information despite having little technical experience. His latest endeavour as Account Manager at Sentinel Solar, one of Canada’s oldest solar distributors, will allow him to continue expanding his knowledge and customer base as he begins selling an entire suite of solar components, including battery storage and Sentinel’s best-selling dual-axis tracker system. As the ELSE Speaker of the House, Alex is the all-around helper; maintaining all incoming info emails, organizing meetings, and keeping board targets on track. Alex is deeply passionate about making solar a mainstream energy source and enjoys making connections with young professionals who want to make similar innovative changes.

 

 

Chapters Liaisons
 

James Law, ELSE Canada, Chapter Liaison East

Services Manager, TREC

TREC is a non-profit developer of community solar projects and back-office services provider for community groups issuing securities to finance local projects. TREC is also the incubator of SolarShare, one of North America's largest solar co-operatives. As the Services Manager, James leads his team in the administration of over $25 million in community bonds and shares, enabling the development of social impact projects, including renewable energy and innovation spaces. They also contribute research and resources to help communities develop their capacity in asset development and examine the benefits of social finance.

Kathryn MacDonald, ELSE Canada, Chapter Liaison West

Community Team Representative, BC Hydro

Katie graduated from the University of Toronto in 2014 with a double major in Environmental Studies and Ethics, Society and Law. Katie first became involved in solar energy in her last year of U of T as a Solar Ambassador for ELSE. She has worked in the renewable energy field as a tour guide at the wind turbine at Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver, and as the Outreach Coordinator for SolarShare Co-op in Toronto. Recently, Katie returned to BC Hydro, and works as a Community Team Representative to educate the public around the province about energy conservation, renewable energy, innovation and sustainability. BC Hydro is an electric utility that produces approximately 90% of B.C. Hydro’s generation from hydroelectric generation, and supplements this with additional renewable energy sources such as solar and wind from independent power producers. As the Western Chapter Development Chair, Katie’s role is to act as the key point of contact between the ELSE National Board and the western provincial boards and facilitate their growth.

 

Communications 
 

M. Ryan Manchee, ELSE Canada, Communications Chair

Canada & Central US Sales Manager, Jinko Solar Canada

Ryan’s commitment to the renewable energy sector in Ontario began in 2009 with his work on the Green Energy Act Campaign as the Business Development Manager of the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association. After returning to post-secondary education he was inducted into the Ryerson Centre for Urban Energy Incubation Hub as the Director of the residential energy conservation and retrofitting program, EnergySavers, and was awarded with a commendation by Corporate Knights Magazine as one of Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders. Ryan now pulls double duty as the Manager of the Canadian subsidiary of one of the world’s largest and most bankable solar module manufactures, JinkoSolar, as well as working with the American sales team in the Central Mid-West US. JinkoSolar is a vertically integrated global leader in the production of solar photovoltaic modules with an annual capacity of approximately 4GW each for silicon ingots, wafers, and solar PV cells, and approximately 5.5GW for solar PV modules. As the Director of Communications Ryan role is to manage the external communications requirements of the functional committees with the membership at large, as well as develop long-term strategic communications planning to ensure continuity of the enterprise.

Ian Murray, ELSE Canada, Communications Webmaster

Senior Engineering Student, University of Waterloo

Studying Electrical Engineering at Canada's premier undergraduate engineering school, Ian originally joined ELSE because he felt there weren't enough opportunities around campus for students to be exposed to renewable energy. His previous experience in the industry includes: prototyping nano-scale solar cells at a lab outside Shanghai, designing testing platforms for semiconductor devices in the Bay Area, and coding tools to help utilities analyze energy usage around the GTA.

Daniel Hoile, ELSE Canada, Communications Social

Regional Sales Manager, KACO new energy Inc.

KACO new energy is a 101 year old German manufacturer with over 8GW of PV inverters deployed worldwide since 1997. With manufacturing in Germany, South Korea, United States and Canada, KACO develops and brings to market inverter solutions from 250watt module-level power electronics to 2MW utility power stations. As a Regional Sales Manager, Daniel is responsible for strategic and tactical sales planning along with identifying, qualifying, and presenting product capabilities and by expanding business partnerships, developing new relationships and entering new markets on behalf of KACO. As the Director of Social Media, Dan’s role is to manage and provide content facilitation for the various social media platforms utilized by ELSE.

 

 

 

 
   

Gabriel Constantin, ELSE Canada, Mentorship General

Team Leader, Environmental and Permitting Services at DNV GL

Gabriel Constantin holds a B.Sc. in Geomatics applied to the Environment and an M. Sc. in Geographical Sciences. Since joining DNV GL, in mid-2012, Gabriel has been involved in more than a dozen renewable energy mandates in Ontario and abroad. He has quickly focused his field of expertise around the environmental and permitting aspect of renewable energy projects as well as the relevant regulations and energy policies of Ontario. More precisely, Gabriel has significantly contributed in the procurement of Renewable Energy Approvals (REAs) for multiple solar and wind projects in Ontario by coordinating with agencies (MOECC, MNRF and MTCS) and stakeholders, participating in public open house, managing subcontractors, and writing the mandatory REA reports. His experiences also include project management, environmental impact assessments, due diligence, permitting at different government level and an array of consultation activities.

Jonathan Game, ELSE Canada, Solar Ambassador Program Co-Chair

Sr. Project Manager, Episolar

Jonathan Game began his career in marketing, social media, and legal affairs for BBDO, an international advertising agency working with large multi-national companies including the International Olympic Committee, Pepsico and Procter&Gamble. Moving into the financial sector focusing on investments in emerging markets, he currently is the Senior Project Manager at Episolar, a private equity development corporation focusing on renewable energy in the African sector and emerging markets in the global South. For the last two years Jonathan has developed and managed special projects in legal and business affairs in Sub-Saharan Africa, relying on his experience developing utility scale solar projects. He has worked with ECA’s from Scandinavia, South Africa and the United States to ensure projects reach financial close in this challenging market. To date, Jonathan has helped develop a special purpose vehicle for one West Africa’s largest solar installations with some of Europe’s largest banking institutions. Having lived and worked abroad for over five years, Jonathan has been involved with various projects both in Canada and internationally, focusing on cleantech and emerging markets. Jonathan enjoys biking, travel, and all things new tech in the renewable energy sector, and any new policy. Jonathan graduated from Concordia University and McGill University in Environmental Studies and Management respectively.

Mitchell Niles, ELSE Canada, Solar Ambassador Eastern Canada

Solar System Designer, SolPowered Energy Corp.

Mitchell began working in the solar industry in 2012 at SolPowered Energy Corp, an Ontario solar energy developer specializing in the deployment of medium and large photovoltaic solar systems on building roof tops. In 2014 SolPowered Energy Corp. merged with iSolara Solar Power, Ottawa's first choice for residential, commercial, agricultural and institutional solar systems with over 500 completed projects in Eastern Ontario. As a Solar System Designer, Mitchell has experience preparing hundreds of system designs and providing technical support during construction on projects up to 400 kW. He also developed and maintains a comprehensive operations and maintenance program for photovoltaic solar systems, and has improved an internal model to determine the benefits for customers of a net-metering solar system. Mitchell is passionate about solar energy as our primary source of energy and enjoys learning of innovations in renewable energy technology and policy. Mitchell holds a Bachelor's of Engineering with High Distinction from Carleton University in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering: Smart Technologies for Power Generation and Distribution.

 

Projects
 

Simon Guan, ELSE Canada, Projects Chair

Sustainability Programs Manager, General Motors of Canada Ltd.

Simon has an MBA, an Environmental Engineering minor, and a Certificate for Energy Management. He has consulted on sustainability projects at Steam Whistle, Harbourfront Centre, and MCIS. During his studies, he was involved in environmental work on-campus: he co-founded the Environment Management Committee, organized a sustainability case competition and eco-fashion show, and held several positions on environmental student clubs such as WEAO and UTERN. At General Motors of Canada, Simon has been instrumental in bringing about a culture of sustainability. In 2015, GM of Canada was named one of Canada's Greenest Employers and Simon continues to help GM lead in areas of innovative collaborations, community environmental education, and facility operational efficiency. In ELSE, Simon led the growth of the Solar Ambassador Program to 7 new student chapters and over 300 new student members. This year as the Project Director, Simon hopes to bring online solar systems in collaboration with non-profit organizations and remote communities in Canada.

Mark Phelan, ELSE Canada, Projects General

Consultant, KPMG Global Infrastructure Advisory

KPMG is a leading worldwide professional services firm providing audit, tax and advisory services. KPMG’s Global Infrastructure Advisory group supports public and private sector clients across the value chain of infrastructure projects around the world; key industries include energy, mining, and public infrastructure. As a consultant on the Infrastructure Investments team, Mark specializes in strategy and mergers and acquisitions for power and utilities companies and investors.

Emily Jansons, ELSE Canada, Projects General

Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Community Outreach, SkyPower Global

Emily entered into the solar industry over two years' ago, coming from a background in international development working in government, higher education and non-profit organizations in Canada and abroad. As Manager of CSR at SkyPower, Emily defines and develops the strategies, projects, and reporting to ensure social, economic and environmental sustainability through education and empowerment of local communities in SkyPower's priority markets. SkyPower is the largest and one of the most successful developers and owners of utility-scale solar energy projects in the world. SkyPower’s over 30 utility-scale solar Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and Contracts in aggregate represent well in excess of US $80 billion worth of long-term renewable energy sales to leading utilities and governments around the world. As part of the ELSE Projects committee, Emily is working to build strategic partnerships and source resources for various projects, including the Toronto Solar Decathlon Team for their 2017 competition in China and SunFarmer's solar irrigation systems for farmers in Nepal.
